The Inspiring History of Theni Anandham
In the quiet village of Kumbakonam, Thiru Kali Anandham, a man with big dreams, was chatting with his friends one day. One of them mentioned that doing business in Kumbakonam would be a great idea. Inspired by this, Thiru Kali Anandham decided to start a clothing business there. He gathered his weaves and his close ones and moved to Kumbakonam, filled with hope and determination.
However, things didn’t go as planned. The business didn’t make much profit, and he had to give it up. But Thiru Kali Anandham’s dream of owning a successful business never faded. He had three children—Dharmarajan, Selvarajan, and a daughter. He wanted his children to achieve what he couldn’t and started training them for the business. The boys were eager to learn and spent more time understanding the business than playing.
During this time, the younger son became fascinated by an old black telephone in a nearby shop. He dreamed of owning a store where he could use a phone like that. Just like their father, the boys were focused and driven. They didn’t enjoy their studies, especially English, and often tried to avoid classes. This led them to skip college and jump straight into learning about the clothing business. The older son went to work at a relative’s store in Tirupathur, and the younger one in Udumalaipettai, earning only Rs.1000 a month.
After three years, their father asked if they were ready to start their own business. They were thrilled. Their beloved brother-in-law, Annachi, stepped in to guide them. They chose Theni as the best place to start their business. In 1992, they opened ‘Anandh Tex’ in Theni with a small amount of money and one worker. Their hard work paid off, and by 1995, they expanded the store. They then started “Anandha’s,” offering more products and seeing more success.
In 2002, they launched ‘Theni Anandham’ in a 1500 sq. ft. store on Bagavathi Amman Koil Street, with 45 workers. The business grew quickly, thanks to their customers’ love and support. They expanded to 2300 sq. ft. with 300 workers. In 2016, they opened a second store in Dindigul, followed by a third in Madurai in 2017, both achieving great success.
After Kali Anandham’s passing, Annachi became a father figure to Dharmarajan and Selvarajan. Annachi’s older son, Dr. Anand, now heads the Dindigul branch. From one worker in a small space to over 1500 employees today, the journey of Theni Anandham is truly inspiring.
